Wallsend Eagles first started out as Newcastle Eagles in 1989 and were based at Western School in Wallsend, North Tyneside.  The club was ran by Phyllis Thorman and Jan Neighbour with Ken Thorman as the coach.

During the early years the team consisted of players who later went on to play professional rugby full time such as Steve Rutherford, Kevin Neighbour, Steve Bradley and Robin Peers who all played for Gateshead Thunder.

Chris, Paul and Neil Thorman were brothers who also started out playing for the Eagles as youngsters.  Paul and Neil went on to play for Gateshead Thunder with Chris going on to play for super league teams Huddersfield Giants & Hull.  Chris also took time out to play in Australia as did Kevin Neighbour.

The current coach of Gateshead Thunder, Chris Hood also played for the Eagles as a junior.

1998 saw the club close down with lack of players until 2001 when a chance meeting brought Steve Walmsley into contact with Phyllis and Jan.  Steve came from St Helens where Rugby League runs through most people’s blood.  Looking for a new challenge after helping coach Killingworth Rockets Steve, with the help of Phyllis & Jan, began looking for new players for the Eagles.

News of the resurrected club team spread and within weeks there was renewed interest.  The new Eagles team went on to play teams such as Sunderland, Whitley Bay, Shiney Row Sharks and Gateshead Panthers.  Within the first year of starting up again Newcastle Eagles won the league.

By 2005 we had two teams and werejoined by Robin Peers, a local lad who after playing for the Eagles as a youngster later went on to play for Gateshead Thunder.  Robin brought new coaching ideas and currently works for the RFL.

Newcastle Eagles continued to train and play games at Western Middle school until unfortunately in 2006 the school was demolished.  The Eagles then re-located to Wallsend Sports Centre.
