Wallsend Eagles first started out as Newcastle Eagles in 1989 and were based at During the early years the team consisted of players who later went on to play professional rugby full time such as Steve Rutherford, Kevin Neighbour, Steve Bradley and Robin Peers who all played for Gateshead Thunder. Chris, Paul and Neil Thorman were brothers who also started out playing for the Eagles as youngsters. Paul and Neil went on to play for Gateshead Thunder with Chris going on to play for super league teams Huddersfield Giants & Hull. Chris also took time out to play in The current coach of Gateshead Thunder, Chris Hood also played for the Eagles as a junior. 1998 saw the club close down with lack of players until 2001 when a chance meeting brought Steve Walmsley into contact with Phyllis and Jan. Steve came from News of the resurrected club team spread and within weeks there was renewed interest. The new Eagles team went on to play teams such as Sunderland, By 2005 we had two teams and werejoined by Robin Peers, a local lad who after playing for the Eagles as a youngster later went on to play for Gateshead Thunder. Robin brought new coaching ideas and currently works for the RFL. Newcastle Eagles continued to train and play games at By 2007 the club had expanded to three teams and saw the arrival of Tony Kelly who had previously coached Gateshead Panthers in the Yorkshire League. In 2008 the club committee decided to change the name of the team from Newcastle Eagles to Wallsend Eagles. It was thought that the new name would reflect on the huge local talent that came out of Wallsend. It was also this year that the Eagles moved to their new and current location at Benefield sports centre. By 2009 The Eagles consisted of 4 age teams and also saw the Eagles under 16’s venture into the Today Wallsend Eagles currently has 4 teams which consist of an open age team, under 15’s, under 13’s and under 11’s which all train on Saturday mornings. We have 7 coaches in total and a committee of 8. |
