Wallsend Eagles got off to a good start to their inaugural season in the RLC with a try on 4 minutes by Hooker Carl Cockburn setting up an early 6-0 lead.

The early exchanges were very even and before long Winlaton had levelled the scores with a well worked try from Prop Tony Kennedy. Winlaton then added three further scores before Wallsend then hit back before half time with a try from Drew Taylor to leave the scores 24-12 and a crowd eagerly anticipating what looked to be a promising second half.   

The second half ended up being a very one sided affair with a bigger and more experienced Winlaton side running away with the game somewhat. The second half saw them keep Wallsend scoreless and run in a further 6 tries to leave the final score 58-12. Man of the Match was given to Winlaton scrum half Scot Cartner who crossed the whitewash numerous times and was a constant thorn in Wallsends side. The 58-12 result gives newcomers Wallsend a few things to work on but also establishes Winlaton as one of the favourites to lift the RLC North East title in 2010.
