After twice going close in recent weeks Wallsend Eagles got their first ever open age victory at home to a spirited Whitley Bay Barbarians side. Hooker Chris Prior opened the scoring on 2 minutes but not until Wallsend were given a scare by Whitley Bay flyer Daniel Persson whos break was only halted by a desperate tackle from full back Dave Richardson. After the first try Wallsend kept pushing and added 5 further converted tries before half time. These tries came from throughout the team with Alan Stevenson, Cook, Dan Gray, Kai Stevenson and McCabe all crossing the whitewash. The half time score stood at 36-0 to the home side.
A great break from McCabe opened up the second half which led to 17 year old Jonas Hirondelle getting a debut try with his first touch on a rugby league field! Eagles then added a further try through Gilmore before Whitley Bay got onto the scoresheet with a try in the corner from the impressive Daniel Persson. Avery then turned creator for Eagles delivering an impressive inside ball for Alan Stevenson to score and then Vuadreau crossed to extend the lead to 58-4. The courageous Whitley Bay side then fought back with a nice try from the restart. Persson turned provider this time when he collected the spilled kick off and fed Gavin Duffy who crossed to the right hand side of the posts. The conversion left the score at 58-10 entering the last 20 minutes. Eagles then added to the score with the second tries of the day from both Vuadreau and Kai Stevenson before Phillips crossed for what would be the final try of the day. The final score stood at 72-10 and was an impressive first win for Wallsend. Whitley Bay however need commended for their tenacity and spirit showing there are definately things to build on in the coming weeks. |
